2018 Shadyside Hospital Foundation Grants
Our 2018 grants will continue to improve Shadyside Hospital and the patient experience.
The Shadyside Hospital Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to announce the approval of 37 grant requests, totaling almost $850,000 of funding for the 2018 fiscal year. The grants have a focus on 5 program areas, including Process & Strategy Improvement, Patient Care & Satisfaction, Nurse Education, Community Outreach and Research, each uniquely positioned to improve Shadyside Hospital for years to come.

UPMC Shadyside Institute for Quality and Innovation
The Foundation continues to support its unique strategic plan, the Shadyside Improvement Model. A restricted fund provided by the Hulme family subsidizes the salaries, benefits and office structure of two Improvement Specialists. They are responsible for the analysis, design, implementation and spread of improvement projects throughout the hospital. This long-standing initiative has facilitated over 2000 innovative ideas that contribute to UPMC Shadyside’s reputation as a reliable and high-quality institution.
Moving Beyond Screening to Changing Maternal Behavior with Case Management
UPMC Shadyside’s Family Health Center delivers medical care for people of all ages in the Pittsburgh Community. This grant will enable the Family Health Center to identify high-risk women between pregnancies. A stipend for an AmeriCorps volunteer will assist in providing additional efforts to directly improve behavior.
Enhanced Depression Care Through Behavioral Health Care Coordination
This specialized program aims to provide depression care at the hospital’s Family Health Center. Funds will go towards a care coordinator to track care provided in the system, patient education, and patient self-management.
Compassionate Care for Oncology Caregivers
Nurses who care for critically ill oncology patients face difficult challenges throughout their workday. This Nurse Education grant provides monthly unit based, grief counselor-led debriefing sessions for oncology nurses. This comprehensive program provides imperative skills to recognize and prevent compassion fatigue in our dedicated and hard-working staff members.
Targeting the Vitamin A – Retinoic acid pathway: A New Therapeutic Strategy for IDH-Mutant Malignancies
UPMC Shadyside participates in research studies that directly improve patient care, including the investigation of Vitamin A in cancer care. This grant will help determine the safety and efficacy of retinoic acid treatment in patients with IDH-mutant malignancies.
